Bill Brewer Firm Disqualification in Int’l Trial Reversed

A Dallas judge improperly disqualified the law firm formerly known as Bickel & Brewer from being involved in a multimillion-dollar international business dispute after the law firm hired a former executive from the company it is suing who had confidential information about the case, the Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday. The justices say the trial court used the wrong legal standard.

DMN: Bankruptcy Judge Approves EFH’s Plan

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Sontchi ruled Thursday that Energy Future Holdings can move ahead on breaking up the company, setting the stage for Texas’ largest power company to emerge from bankruptcy court in the spring. The ruling effectively ends a fight among hedge funds and Wall Street tycoons that just six months ago appeared as if it might drag out for years.

Tens of thousands of low-income people in North Texas need legal assistance but cannot afford it. Federal Judges Yield Highest Satisfaction in HBA and DBA Judiciary Polls

Houston and Dallas business attorneys are more satisfied with the federal judges in their area than they are with state judges, according to new data from the Houston Bar Association and Dallas Bar Association. The two bar associations’ judiciary polls, which come out every two years, rate individual judges based on HBA and DBA members’ satisfaction with their impartiality, preparation for hearings and trial, timely opinions, knowledge of the law and temperament in the courtroom.
