The Latest

— On Wednesday, Oct. 25, the Dallas Bar Foundation will honor Locke Lord of counsel Frank Stevenson with its 2023 Fellow Justinian Award at its 30th Annual Fellows Luncheon. Stevenson has held numerous leadership positions serving the legal profession and the community, including 2017 chair of the DBF, 2008 president of the Dallas Bar Association and 2016-2017 president of the State Bar of Texas. At the luncheon, the foundation will also introduce and welcome the new DBF fellows, whose donations support the DBF’s mission, and announce the statewide winner of the Stephen H. Philbin II Award for Excellence in Legal Reporting. Finally, the DBF will highlight its new programs, including the foundation’s new Hon. Harlin Hale Fellowship established by the Dallas Bar Association’s bankruptcy section upon the judge’s retirement last year. Judge Hale is well known for mentoring the next generation of bankruptcy attorneys. The fellowship is awarded to one rising 2L or rising 3L law student and entails a six-week summer internship in the Northern District of Texas’ federal bankruptcy court. The fellow is also paid a $5,000 stipend.

Though fundraising is not the foundation’s agenda for the luncheon, any proceeds from the event will be allocated to the foundation’s grants program, which provides grants to local nonprofits whose needs align with the DBF’s mission.

Cheek, a partner in Bell Nunnally’s litigation practice, previously served on the State Fair’s advisory board and has been heavily involved with the Big Tex Livestock Auction. The auction is a philanthropic event that supports youth agricultural projects in Texas and provides scholarships for inner-city Dallas and rural Texas students attending in-state colleges and universities. Last year, the auction raised $1.8 million for roughly 200 kids. Cheek is currently serving as the auction’s immediate past chair, and has also served as the State Fair’s cabinet chair, development cabinet vice-chair and raffle chair.
