This week’s edition of P.S. features March dates for the Dallas Bar Association’s phone legal clinic, an event in San Antonio featuring prominent policymakers aimed at educating the public on homelessness and the revelation of LegalAid of NorthWest Texas’ honorees for its 2024 Women’s Advocacy Awards.

— This upcoming Tuesday, Feb. 27, St. Mary’s University will host a panel of policymakers and experts as they discuss how the community can help people experiencing homelessness. More than 3,155 people in Bexar County experienced homelessness during the 2023 point-in-time count, according to nonprofit Close to Home San Antonio.
The panel, moderated by St. Mary’s president Thomas M. Menger, will feature U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro of the Texas 20th Congressional District, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, former Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Haven for Hope CEO Kim Jeffries and St. Mary’s University clinical professor of law Genevieve Hébert Fajardo.
The Feb. 27 panel discussion is free and open to the public, and will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the University Center, Conference Room A on the St. Mary’s campus.
— On June 5, Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas will host its 24th Annual Women’s Advocacy Awards, which honors lawyers and organizations that have made a difference in the lives of women and children through leadership and commitment to serving them. The Louise Raggio Women’s Legal Advocate award will go to to two attorneys: practice attorney Nina Orendain of Akin and attorney advisor Miguel Baeza of the Small Business Administration. The Business Leadership award will go to Nexstar Media Group general counsel and executive vice president Rachel Morgan, who The Texas Lawbook profiled earlier this year. The Nonprofit Leadership award will go to Dorothy Hopkins, president and CEO of Frazier Revitalization. The Champion of Justice Award will go to Deborah and Leon Carter, and two lawyers will receive the Advocates on the Rise award: Boeing Company senior counsel Lindsey Provost and Figari & Davenport associate Nicole Muñoz Huschka.
Proceeds at the event, which includes a silent auction, will benefit LANWT as it continues its work serving low-income residents and families in need of civil legal aid. To date, LANWT has provided pro bono legal services to more than 1 million low-income women and families seeking safety, security and lives free from domestic violence and abuse.
The awards event on June 5 will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dallas Arts District Mansion.

— Every Wednesday in March, volunteer lawyers with the Dallas Bar Association will answer legal questions for free via phone through the DBA’s LegalLine e-clinics. Each Wednesday clinic will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Volunteer attorneys will call clients and will provide up to 15 minutes of free legal advice. Those in need of legal advice can click here to complete an online form. Space is limited, and registration will close at noon on the Tuesday before each Wednesday clinic.
