Premium Subscriber Q&A: Brett Barnes

January 21, 2026 Allen Pusey & Mark Curriden

In this Q&A with The Texas Lawbook, Brett Barnes discusses the traits he seeks in outside counsel and what outside counsel need to know when working with him.

The Texas Lawbook: What do you look for in hiring outside counsel?

Brett Barnes: Pragmatism and advice you can actually use. I appreciate responsiveness and thoroughness, but what I value most is judgment and a clear focus on what the company is ultimately trying to accomplish.

Lawbook: What does outside counsel need to know about you?

Barnes: I’m always looking for creative, efficient solutions, whether the matter is transactional or adversarial. That might mean a fixed-fee structure instead of hourly billing or a thoughtful settlement approach that avoids drawn-out litigation. I want outside counsel to be successful as well, and the best way to get there is by delivering real value. That’s always the priority.
