Texas Lawbook: How hands-on are you in litigation matters?

Judy Liu: It depends. I am most hands-on in the most significant matters and want to be involved as much as I can so that I can keep senior management updated, direct strategy and coordinate with our insurers as needed.

Texas Lawbook: What do you look for in hiring outside counsel? Do you have specific criteria?

Liu: This is not an exhaustive list, but high on the list are expertise and experience in handling the particular type of matter, judgment, knowledge of the judge and venue, responsiveness, good communication, fees that are appropriate for the type of matter, ability to work well with internal stakeholders and external parties, ability to see the big picture.

Texas Lawbook: What does outside counsel need to know about you?

Liu: I expect them to take care of business, stay in touch and to keep me informed. I don’t want to be surprised.
