Tuesday Morning GC Jennyfer Gray shares about what she seeks in hiring outside counsel, diversity and pro bono.
Texas Lawbook: What do you look for in hiring outside counsel?
Jennyfer Gray: Expertise and the ability to communicate/teach. I want outside partners who don’t only answer the question asked. Rather, they look at the bigger picture. I appreciate counsel who stay abreast of our business and industry.
Lawbook: How important is diversity in hiring outside counsel and what do you require of outside regarding diversity?
Gray: Diversity is a personal and professional priority. I believe diversity of experiences, perspectives and identity brings creative solutions to business problems and allows for important and effective representation.
Lawbook: How important is a law firm’s pro bono and public service efforts when you are looking to hire firms?
Gray: I care about the community outside of our corporate walls and believe that advocacy and involvement enrich a lawyer’s ability to advise companies and solve problems. Pro bono work gets everyone out of their bubble and improves their interaction with people. We are a national retail company that wants our lawyers invested in communities and active in them. Everyone wins when we give back.
