Well-respected tax attorney R. Brent Clifton has joined Winstead’s Dallas office as a shareholder in the taxation, employee benefits and private business practice group.
Clifton joins Winstead from Locke Lord, where he was a partner. He has almost 30 years of experience as an attorney and focuses his practice on real estate related transactions. He said he made the move to Winstead because of the firm’s strong reputation in real estate practice.
“I’m really happy to be here,” he said. “I’m very excited and am looking forward to what the future holds here at Winstead.”
Clifton has a long history of representing fund sponsors and real estate developers of all property types in the structuring of their equity ventures and exit strategies as well as representing institutional investors in their fund formations and project investments.
According to Clifton, the growth of multi-family real estate, combined multi-family and retail properties, and health care real estate are a few hot sectors that will stick around in his practice area in the years to come.
With the Senate becoming more Democratic after the presidential election, Clifton says it will be interesting to see how the future legislation will affect these sectors in regard to the Obama administration’s proposal to tax revisions that would change the carried interest rules.
“Key legislation and how it affects tax will be one to watch,” he said.
A licensed certified public accountant in Texas, Clifton received his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Abilene Christian University, and his law degree from Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law.
