(Feb. 5) – SMU Dedman School of Law honored five lawyers with its most prestigious award at its 29th Distinguished Alumni Awards event at the Belo Mansion & Pavilion last night.

The Dallas-based law school recognized four alumni and one honorary alumna: Jim Baldwin, executive vice president and general counsel for Dr Pepper Snapple Group, class of 1986; Shonn Brown, partner at litigation boutique Gruber Hurst Elrod Johansen Hail Shank, class of 1998; Cece Cox, chief executive offer of the Resource Center, class of 2004; Windle Turley, founder of the Turley Law Firm, class of 1965; and Catharina Haynes, judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Baldwin received the Award for Corporate Service. At Dr Pepper Snapple Group, he has played a key role in the Plano-based company’s major acquisitions and restructurings. In 2008, he advised the soft drink company in its spin-off from London-based Cadbury Schweppes PLC.

Brown received the Emerging Leader Award. The trial lawyer has a number of significant victories representing both plaintiffs and defendants, including helping secure nearly $1.4 million for Hunt Consolidated in a high-profile case against Honeywell International in 2014.

Cox received the Award for Public Service. She has played an instrumental role in the passage of the City of Dallas’ sexual orientation nondiscrimination policy and the Dallas Independent School District’s first anti-harassment and anti-bullying policies.

Turley received the Award for Private Practice. The legendary trial lawyer has achieved a number of record-breaking jury verdicts, including two in the top 10 nationwide.

Judge Haynes received the Honorary Alumna Award. She chaired the Appellate Judges Education Institute Summit co-hosted by SMU Dedman School of Law in 2014.
