Jackson Walker Adds Houston-based Energy and Construction-Focused Partner From White & Case

January 29, 2025 Nick Peck

Jackson Walker has announced that Houston-based attorney Matthew Penny has joined its firm as a partner in its energy practice group.

Penny joined the firm after spending nearly a year and a half at White & Case, where he primarily focused on working with clients on energy-related construction projects.

“Matthew’s deep expertise in construction law and his ability to guide clients through complex contracting and project execution challenges make him an invaluable addition to our firm. His unique combination of transactional and litigation experience enhances our ability to serve clients across the energy and construction industries with both strategic advice and practical solutions,” Jesse Lotay, the chair of Jackson Walker’s energy practice, said in a recent release.

Penny graduated from Emory University in 1999 and earned his law degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 2002.

To begin his law career, following his graduation, Penny spent the better half of seven years working as an associate attorney at Wasserman, Comden Casselman & Pearson, Brown Sims and Cokinos, and Bosien & Young, where he worked on various case types.

Then, in 2013, Penny transitioned in-house, working as an EPC attorney for over a year and a half for Houston’s KBR, primarily working on cases involving the firm’s gas monetization and downstream businesses.

Following his time at KBR, Penny joined Shell in 2014. He then spent nine years at the firm working in two different roles on a wide range of construction and energy related cases, initially serving as its senior legal counsel and then transitioning to a CP lead contract manager role before eventually joining White & Case in late 2023.

Through this new addition, Jackson Walker will look to leverage Penny’s extensive experience, gained throughout his 22 years in the construction and energy sectors.

“Jackson Walker’s collaborative culture and commitment to excellence provide the perfect platform to deliver comprehensive legal solutions for clients in the energy and construction sectors. I look forward to contributing to the team and helping our clients achieve their goals,” Penny said in a recent release.
