(February 7) — Jeffrey Anderson, a partner in the Dallas office of family law firm McCurley Orsinger, has been named general counsel of the Southlake-based non-profit Kids Matter International (KMI). He will serve in his new position on a pro bono basis and will continue his private practice uninterrupted.

Anderson said he couldn’t even hesitate when longtime friend and KMI Chairman Coye Conner, Jr., approached him about the opportunity.

“My family and I have been longtime supporters of KMI, and we have done a fair amount of volunteer work with them,” Anderson said in a statement. “That exposure has been infectious; you just want to do more. So when I was asked if I would consider becoming general counsel, there was no way I could resist the opportunity to work with some of the kindest people I’ve ever met, while also helping children.”

KMI serves the needs of abused, displaced and disadvantaged children around the world including India, Honduras, the United Kingdom and the United States. Anderson said he first got involved with the eight-year-old organization when he was at a mediation with Conner, who asked him to buy raffle tickets for a KMI fundraising event.

The SMU Dedman School of Law graduate expects the volume of work on KMI matters to be cyclical, but that on average he will spend 20 to 30 hours per week. He said right now it will require more of his time because the non-profit’s Monte Carlo-themed Gala is coming up on Feb. 21.

As KMI’s general counsel, Anderson said he handles anything legal that comes up. For the gala, that means addressing legal questions related to non-profits and raffles.

“I’m learning as I go,” he said. “But I have [KMI President and CEO] Joe King, who knows everything about charities. He helps me figure out what the question is we need the answer to.”
