(April 2) – Husch Blackwell and Jackson Walker are the beneficiaries of 20 lawyers who are on the move after Gardere’s merger with Foley became official on April 1.
Four of the lawyers departing Gardere were leaders of practice or industry groups. Husch Blackwell has added Steve Camp and Scott Davis, who chaired the banking and finance practice and led its insurer representation group, respectively. Jackson Walker picked up Gardere’s former real estate chair Kevin Kelley and ex-hospitality practice chair Cindy Brotman Nelson.
Overall, Husch Blackwell expanded its Texas presence with 14 total attorneys across Dallas, Houston and Austin. The Kansas City law firm beefed up its insurance, banking and finance and public law expertise with the new additions.
Camp, who represents several large regional banks, is joined by banking and finance partners Brian Memory and Reuben Rosof; of counsel Matt Crockett; and associate Caleb Rush. Rosof is based in Houston while the rest of the group offices in Dallas.
The insurance coverage and litigation team includes partners Davis, David Timmins and Jason Heep and senior counsel Eric Levy. They are all based in Dallas.
Houston partners Kate David and Mike Stafford and Austin partner Mark Vane lead the public law team joining Husch Blackwell. It also includes Houston associates Phil Morgan and Ben Stephens, who will join the firm later in April.
Jackson Walker lured four partners and two associates, all of whom will join the firm’s real estate practice. In addition to Kelley and Nelson, the lateral group includes partners George Dunlap and Scott Tuthill and associates James Miers and Ben Whitehill.
Husch Blackwell and Jackson Walker are the latest firms to capitalize on the attrition that has followed the mergers of major Texas law firms with out-of-state firms. DLA Piper, Katten Muchin, Haynes and Boone, Shearman & Sterling and Orrick have all made opportunistic moves this year resulting from the shakeout of Andrews Kurth Kenyon’s combination with Hunton & Williams.
