(Jan. 16) – Chad Mills is taking his corporate law practice to Haynes and Boone, but the Upright Willies will not be joining him.

Chad Mills
Mills, who specializes in structured energy finance and transactions, has been a partner in the Houston office of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft for the past two years. Before that, he was a partner at Sutherland Asbill for eight years.

Haynes and Boone leaders confirmed Monday that Mills, who is a 1998 graduate of the University of Houston Law Center, is expected to join the firm’s Houston office later this week.

Jeff Nichols, who leads HayBoo’s energy finance practice group, said the firm is “extremely excited to attract such a great lawyer with a national and global practice.”

“Chad had lots of opportunities, as several law firms were after him,” Nichols said in an interview Monday. “Chad is a great fit for our firm. We have several mutual clients.

“Chad and I have known each other for years,” he said. “There are a small number of lawyers who are in the international commodities practice.”

Mills has represented a handful of financial institutions involved in structured credit hedging and off-take arrangement supporting the acquisition or development of power plants. He also represented clients in providing secured and mezzanine financing to retail electricity and gas providers.

“We are thrilled to be landing top talent like Chad,” said Haynes and Boone Managing Partner Tim Powers. “Houston remains a highly competitive market for top legal talent.”

The departure of Mills means that Cadwalader will have only three lawyers in its Houston outpost, which the firm opened in 2011.

Haynes and Boone has about 100 lawyers in its Houston office.

FYI: The Chad Mills who leads the Hoosier folk rock group Upright Willies does not appear to be the same Chad Mills joining HayBoo.
