Ex-Leader of T&K’s Mexico City Office Jumps to Baker McKenzie

August 22, 2018 Brooks Igo

(Aug. 22) – Luis Gomar, a cross border transactions pro and former head of Thompson & Knight’s Mexico City office, has joined Baker McKenzie’s Houston office as a partner, the global law firm announced on Monday.

Gomar advises energy and finance clients on domestic and international transactions involving divestitures, financing, fund formations, joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions. He says Baker McKenzie, which has 850 lawyers across 15 offices in seven countries in Latin America, allows his practice to evolve.

“Through the firm’s global platform and network in Latin America, I can better meet the needs of my clients,” he says.

Clients are keyed in on how changes in tax laws and the Trump administration’s international trade strategy will impact their investments abroad, Gomar notes.

“In Mexico, clients are cautiously optimistic with the new administration coming in and hopeful that Mexico, the U.S. and Canada will reach an agreement in NAFTA negotiations,” he says. “Clients, particularly in the energy sector, continue to look at investments in Latin America very positively.”

In addition to Mexico, Gomar points specifically to Brazil and Argentina as countries his clients are looking to invest.

Gomar expects renewable and clean energy opportunities to grow exponentially in Mexico as a result of the its Energy Reform. In the past year, he has represented two solar project developers in selling “very large” solar projects in the country.

“Now that the new administration has signaled they do not plan to make changes to at least that aspect of energy reform, many more renewable energy developers will invest in the market or will look for strategic and financial partners to meet development commitments,” he says.
