Fulbright & Jaworski and Norton Rose to Merge – UPDATED

For the past decade, Fulbright & Jaworski and Norton Rose had been rumored to be in merger talks, even though lawyers at the two law firms contended they were merely “best friends” with benefits. On Wednesday, the firms made their relationship official and permanent, announcing a merger that makes the new firm, which will be called Norton Rose Fulbright, one of the 10 largest in the world.
The new combined law firm will boast 55 offices and 3,800 lawyers around the globe with annual revenues approaching $2 billion. Read the full story for more details.

McKool Smith Wins $368 Million Patent Verdict Against Apple

VirnetX Holding Corporation continued its success in federal court in Tyler, winning a $368 million patent infringement verdict this week against Apple over video conferencing technology. The Nevada company scored an $105.75 million jury verdict against Microsoft in 2010. Dallas-based McKool Smith represented VirnetX in both victories.

Texas Firms Divided in 2012 Presidential Election, but Contributions Favor Obama

Texas law firms have given President Obama $414,603 in contributions and $379,379 to Gov. Romney. Baker Botts lawyers have given the most ($147,242) and favor Romney two-to-one. V&E has the second most money ($130,521) and Fulbright is third ($107,588), but Fulbright lawyers favor Obama two-to-one.

Susman Godfrey has donated $86,965 to the Obama re-election effort and $0 to Romney, while Winstead lawyers have contributed $52,454 to the Romney campaign, but only $8,125 to Obama. Read the article for more details.

AMR Corp. Legal Bankruptcy Fees: $100 Million and Counting

The lawyers advising American Airlines and its creditors in bankruptcy court have made about $100 million so far.

More than a dozen lawyers working regularly on the bankruptcy are charging $1,000 or more and three are billing at $1,150 an hour, according to court records. More than a dozen other lawyers are charging $900 to $975 an hour.

Overall, lawyers billed more than $120 million to AMR since the Fort Worth-based company filed for bankruptcy protection 11 months ago. Read more to get all the inside details.
