(June 6) – Norton Rose Fulbright’s M. Carter Crow assumed office as the new president of the Houston Bar Association at the HBA’s Annual Dinner Meeting on May 15. Crow, 48, succeeds David Chaumette and will lead the fifth largest metropolitan bar association in the nation.

The partner-in-charge of Norton Rose Fulbright’s Houston office said his vision for the bar is to help lawyers be the best lawyers they can be and empower them to help others lead better lives.

“We are improving our services and communications,” he said. “We want to be more accessible, and increasingly relevant to our members.”

In addition to clients becoming more sophisticated and the practice of law continuing to grow more global, Crow says lawyers are facing more fee pressure than ever before.

“Many lawyers feel that their clients and firms are more demanding now than in the past,” said Crow, who has been a member of the HBA Board of Directors since 2007. “Lawyers are expected to generate work, do the work with excellence and still have quality time for their families and friends.”

Crow says internet and data security issues are increasingly important for the public. In an effort to help families protect their children on the internet, one of the current initiatives the bar is undertaking is developing materials to educate parents on how they can protect their families.

The University of Oklahoma College of Law graduate has chaired the Houston Volunteer Lawyers, the Houston Lawyer Referral Service and the Dispute Resolution Center. He is also a past president of the Houston Management Lawyers Forum and has served as a member of The Children’s Fund, Inc., a venture capital charity for children’s causes.

The other newly elected HBA officers joining Crow are Laura Gibson of Ogden, Gibson, Broocks, Longoria & Hall, L.L.P., president-elect; Benny Agosto, Jr. of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Friend, first vice president; Todd M. Frankfort of Flowers & Frankfort, second vice president; Alistair B. Dawson of Beck Redden LLP, secretary; and Neil D. Kelly of Andrews Kurth LLP, treasurer. Chaumette will also serve on the board as immediate past president.
