CDT Roundup: AI, Energy and Giant Deal Shape Diverse Week

Three AI-related deals. A soon-to-be-Japanese-owned digital infrastructure provider sopped up a major alternative energy investor. A Miami-based PE firm bought 10 data centers. You get the idea.

For the week ended May 30, the CDT Roundup reported on 14 transactions valued at a nearly $19.9 billion.

That falls short of last week's 15 deals for $75 billion, but within shouting distance of the 19 transactions valued at $23 billion at this time last year.

CDT Roundup: Light Week, Heavy Energy as Power Plays Drive Activity

For the week ended May 16, the CDT Roundup reported on 12 deals – eight of which were in capital markets – with a total value of about $6 billion, which are both down from the prior week's 21 deals valued at $11.3 billion.

Despite the light slate, last week's transactions were dominated by energy of all kinds.

CDT Roundup: Lone Star Deal Machine Keeps 200+ Lawyers Busy for the Week

For the week ended May 9, the CDT Roundup is reporting 21 deals valued at nearly $11.3 billion. And that doesn't include a $3.25 billion notes offering that closed three weeks ago nor the $56 billion unsolicitied offer for eBay by $11 billion-market-cap GameStop scooped by The Wall Street Journal last week.

White & Case is advising Grapevine-based GameStop, with a team led from New York. GameStop's general counsel is Mark Robinson, who received the 2023 DFW Corporate Counsel Award for General Counsel of the Year for a Small Legal Department.

CDT Roundup: Utilities, Pipelines and Oil Take Center Stage

For the week ended May 2, the CDT Roundup reported on 13 deals valued at nearly $37.9 billion. The prior week had 11 deals reported with a total value of about $19.7 billion, while a year ago at this time, the Roundup reported on 11 deals valued about $4.3 billion.

CDT Roundup: Fiber, Towers and Rare Earths Fuel Diverse Deal Slate

For the week ended April 25, the Roundup reported on 11 deals worth about $19.7 billion, or maybe $69.7 billion, depending on how SpaceX's latest acquisition pans out.

Aside from the SpaceX rent-to-own deal this week's slate of transactions includes the acquisition of a Brazilian Rare Earth source with a 15-year offtake agreement with the U.S.-backed buyer already in place; a $1.5 billion investment in a REIT that specializes in communications towers; the reverse-merger of an offshore oil services firm with a Houston-based competitor; the acquisition of a fiber provider in Alaska; the sale of a compression services provider to a Lubbock firm and the sale of a minority stake in a hyperscale data center developer.

CDT Roundup: Deals Pop, Dollars Drop in Mixed Week

For the week ended April 18, the CDT Roundup reported on 14 deals with a total valuation of just over $3.5 billion, and nearly half of that value came from one deal. The prior week had 10 deals reported with a total value of slightly more than $5 billion, while a year ago at this time, the Roundup reported on 13 deals valued at nearly $2.4 billion. While total deal volume is up of late, total values are muted somewhat by a number of deals reported sans financial terms.

CDT Roundup: Deal Flow Slows, but Debt Steps In to Fill the Gap

For the week ended April 11, the CDT Roundup saw 10 deals reported with a total valuation of just over $5 billion. The prior week had 11 deals reported with a total value of $33 billion, dominated by a $29.1 billion megamerger between food distribution giants Sysco and Jetro Restaurant Depot. A year ago at this time, the Roundup reported on eight deals valued at about $2.4 billion.

This week, however, credit and capital markets dominate the deal numbers. Maybe "dominate" is strong a word to describe three debt issues, a $167 million PIPE and a secondary equity offering that forced a dip in a company stock.

CDT Roundup: Beyond Finally Bags The Container Store in Long-Courted Takeover

The CDT Roundup saw 11 deals reported for the week ended April 4 with a total valuation of nearly $33 billion. The prior week had 13 deals reported with a total value of $10.7 billion, while a year ago at this time there were 19 deals valued at $27.76 billion.

The bulk of the week’s value derives from a $29.1 billion megamerger between two food distribution giants, Sysco and Jetro Restaurant Depot. But the most interesting may be the much smaller acquisition — finally — of The Container Store by Beyond, Inc., better known by its pre-bankruptcy moniker Bed Bath & Beyond.

CDT Roundup: Stable, Not Sluggish as Dealmakers Find Their March Rhythm

The week ended March 28 saw 13 deals with a total reported value of $10.7 billion. The week prior boasted 11 deals valued at $7.5 billion. This time a year ago, there were 21 deals valued at nearly $8.2 billion. We'll choose to reckon stability in those numbers.

Last week's deals had Texas companies in transactions for increased investment in healthcare-related AI platforms, more data centers, and geothermal power development. While Texas lawyers advised on deals for a gas-fired power plant in the West Texas town of Pecos, a mining outfit in Greenland, and a Canadian provider of liquid cooling technologies for AI development.
