Landfill’s Lowered Property Valuation Considered by SCOTX

A unique site with exotic wildlife and an event center, the Texas Disposal Systems landfill near Austin is also a dump, its lawyer argues. The landfill is fighting to uphold a 2019 appraisal review board decision that lowered its valuation from $21.7 million to $2.8 million as part of an equal and uniform tax protest. Travis Central Appraisal District says a district court should review the landfill’s fair market value because of a lack of comparable properties.

SEC: Houston Man Illegally Used Wife’s Insider Info for $1.76M in Profits

Correction: This story has been updated to correct the spelling of the last name of the man accused of insider trading. The Lawbook regrets the error.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed federal insider trading charges Thursday accusing a Houston man with using information he obtained from his wife, who worked in the M&A division at BP, to illegally profit from the British-based oil conglomerate’s $1.3 billion acquisition of TravelCenters of America one year ago.

How the Changing Law of Chevron Deference Might Affect Texas

In January the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in two matters that could significantly change how federal courts are to review decisions made by federal agencies. Chevron deference has often allowed federal agencies to “fill gaps” and implement policy decisions where the statute may not be express. However, the issues before the Supreme Court in Loper Bright Enterprises and Relentless, Inc. call the doctrine’s viability into question.

Features

  • My Five Favorite Books (Veterans Day Edition): Brett Govett, Norton Rose Fulbright - These books captured my attention and taught me valuable lessons on sacrifice and leadership. All of them have connections to Texas in some way and I have found them applicable in the practice of law. They also help to maintain perspective when – one thinks – it was a tough day. As Admiral William H. McRaven and the SEALs say – “The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday.” I hope you enjoy these, and please remember and thank our Veterans at all times – not only on Veterans Day. • My Five Favorite Books (Veterans Day Edition): Chris Dodrill, Greenberg Traurig - The bulk of what I read is history, so listing my top books with a connection to Veterans Day is difficult. There are so many good ones out there. But here are five books that stand out to me. November 11, 2025Chris Dodrill
